Diwali, popularly known as Festival of Lights, is celebrated to honor Rama-Chandra, the seventh avatar. This festival originated as a celebration of Rama’s return to his people after 14 years of exile, during which he fought and won a battle against the demons and the demon king, Ravana. People lit their houses with diyas to celebrate his victory over evil. People also burn crackers and fireworks to celebrate the victory. It is believed that the Goddess of happiness and good fortune, Lakshmi, roams the Earth on this day and enters the house that is clean, pure and bright.
